Maya Basic Interface Training Workshop

"The energetic youths of the community converged on the said date full of excitement for yet another skills for industry training in Maya. Guess what, it was the 3D Artist Jude Ifesieh a long time volunteer with the Regent Park Youth Media Arts Center on the wheels steering this workshop. At the end of the workshop, youths could now navigate through the Maya 2017 interface with ease, learnt some of the industry standard for low poly models,all that is new in Maya and were all fed to a treat with Pista. Divas Program Session 17: “Sharing the Mic... Team Piece Writing: Part I” This week’s Diva’s Program centered on exposing the young ladies to build on their creative foundation, but doing with the help of another person. What stood out to me most was that the whole session had an undercurrent of teamwork and collaboration. Writing can be a solitary activity when gathering thoughts and ideas, but what makes a piece richer and fuller to me is working with another person. Sometimes, the other person may be on the same tangent as you, or on a one but it is the saying of art imitating life. What stood out to me was the Picasso in Pairs game, most of all. I observed and assisted but I also played it. It was something that I remembered vividly because the game itself was a game that forced connections to be built. You had to focus on capturing the person’s face, as you drew but to me, Picasso in Pairs was more about building a sense of trust. There was ...

For this episode of Catch da Flava Youth Radio, we had a panel discussion on Bell Let’s Talk Day since it occurs this year on January 31st. In discussing the importance of events like these, where Bell has created a national campaign to have mental health awareness through donating texts during this day to organizations that help those with mental health issues, we had some questions in terms of mental health. We discussed why it was so important to even have a day to “talk about mental health” as we reflect on the past and cultural viewpoints on mental health. Joel shares that in his Jamaican culture, mental health is nonexistent and that people think ​ those suffering from it should be addressed by the church, causing them to go undiagnosed and untreated. Catch da Flava - Sleep Specialist Judith Mendoza

For the January 30th show of Catch da Flava Youth Radio, we invited Sleep Specialist Judith Mendoza to talk about the importance of sleep for youth. Asking her a series of questions when it comes to the issue of sleep for youth who are growing and struggling with different competing obligations, Judith talked about how sleep is more important for youth than we may realize. She mentions different tips for “sleep hygiene” which is about how to take care of oneself before and after bed. She encourages people to turn off lights and slow down their activity an hour before sleep, and upon waking up, turn on as many lights and open the curtains to signal to the body it is daylight. She mentions that the body can’t tell the difference between daylight and electronic lighting, so that’s why it is important not to have any lights on an hour before sleep or the body will still think it is daylight and have a hard time adjusting.     Speaking on stimulants, Judith says it is ...

For this episode of Catch da Flava Youth Radio, co-host Diamond and Joel talked about the issue of body image and dieting for our panel discussion. In studio for the discussion were Beverly and Erika, to talk about their experiences with dieting and body image issues. When asked about whether they tried diets, Beverly said she had and Erika said she had not, but due to different standards of beauty in their cultures. For Beverly, being thin seemed like an ideal in the culture she was surrounded in while Erika grew up in a community that being "thick" and heavy was healthy and thereby more attractive. Diamond shared that for her, she even tried to diet hoping to be very thin but then she acknowledged that her body was never built that way and so she made her peace with her body and stopped willing it to do something it wasn't made to do. For our January 23rd episode of Catch da Flava Youth Radio, co-hosts Diamond and Joel welcomed CEO and President of Yonge Street Mission (YSM), Angie Drascovic. Angie has an extensive background in social work, having joined in 2013. She was so gracious to come in and do an interview with us. Some of the questions we wanted to explore included what the services at the YSM are, and what they provide for people and families in need. From food to shelter, YSM had a huge scope of services available to the community, with several different locations including Double Take, the second hand clothing store. Angie told our cohosts that whatever comes into the store has to be dry cleaned and steamed before being sent out to the floor, and it had to pass the test of whether she would use the clothes or use them for her children. Despite YSM servicing the community often free of charge, there were clearly standards they hoped to meet in order to preserve the dignity of those who they serve, that ...

For our January 16th, 2018 edition of Catch da Flava Youth Radio, cohost Diamond speaks to guest Scott Miller Berry from Workman Arts about the upcoming Mental Health Series at Hot Docs Cinema, and their opening film “The S Word.” The conversation surrounds issues on suicide, what the documentary is about. Scott talked about themes like isolation, depression, and the warning signs for someone who may be facing issues of suicide. In their collaboration with Hots Docs Cinema to get the word out about mental health, Scott talked about his work with Workman Arts and the organization in general. Workman Arts is an arts initiative which utilizes the impact of the arts on the quality of life for those living with mental health and addiction issues. Because of their heavy emphasis on the arts to support those with mental health concerns, it would only seem a natural fit to collaborate with Hot Docs on this topic. For the second half, Joel and Diamond led a panel discussion on Baptist Minister, Cultural Icon, and Civil Rights Activist Martin Luther King Jr. on his impact in our culture and moving forward the issues around racial equality, especially in North America. Since Martin Luther King Day was the day before and was on what would be his birthday, the panel talked about his legacy and how they experience issues of race today. Diamond talked a little bit about her experience in “Black Culture” class and what she learned from the experience. Other panelists talked about how the speeches of Martin Luther King impacted them and compared the work of Martin Luther King Jr. with Malcolm X. Divas Girl Blog Jan 12 th 2018 Session 14: Our Home on Native Land, Canadian History & Colonization This week the Diva girls had a history lesson on Canadian history. The goal was for the divas to gain a clearer understanding of the dark parts of Canadian history and to learn ways we can recognize these parts while still enjoying what we love about Canada. Since we are just coming back from the break the divas first started off with circle rock talking about what they did on the holidays. To start off the first activity the girls were told to write down all the words that you would use to describe Canada. They also had to draw what they think of when someone says “ Canada”. The divas were asked what are some misconceptions that people think about Canada and what is one thing they would change about Canada. For the cohost Diamond led our youth team in a panel discussion on how the winter affects people’s mental, emotional, and physical state. She mentioned issues like seasonal depression, anxiety, and lethargy and asked the youth panelists about their own experience with seasonal ailments. Diamond highlighted one of the issues of the season known as seasonal affective disorder (SAD) where some people depending on their biology, may experience a dip in their emotional state and render them to be in a state of depression during the winter season due to lack of sunlight and vitamin D. They mentioned different methods to combat the “winter blues” like sitting under a special lamp that is supposed to give the same type of nutrients sunlight does. For our return show of Catch da Flava Youth Radio on January 9th, co-hosts Ahmed and Divine welcomed guest Amanda Neale-Robinson from Toronto Inner-City Rugby Foundation (TIRF). They talked about her role at TIRF, what it offers to youth and why Rugby is so important for team values and to help teach young people how to manage. Both Ahmed and Divine are part of their high school rugby team and talked about their experience as rugby players and what the sport means to them. Divine discussed his role in the team and how it gives him exercise in a fun way, and Ahmed talked about the multiple roles he plays on the team and how much fun he has found it to be. Amanda talked about the logistics of the sport, how there are different types of games such as 7’s and 15’s, called such because of the number of players on the field. For this edition of Catch da Flava Youth radio show, Diamond hosted our panel discussion on youth homelessness with our youth panelists. Present for the panel discussion were Beverly, Erika, Joel, and Johanna. They all shared their perspective on what the causes for youth homelessness are, what they think about helping out when it comes to youth homelessness, and issues like laws that make it hard for youth that have no shelter, like fines against panhandling and laws against homelessness. We welcomed guest Aamar Khwaja from Mod Garden to the show to talk about his new invention called Tiny Farms. Tiny Farms is still in the early stages of development, but looks to change the way we eat and promote healthier living by producing a product that grows fresh plants for consumers with urban lifestyles. For this edition of Catch da Flava Youth Radio, co-host Diamond Bailey discussed the issue of net neutrality with our youth panel discussion, consisting of Beverly, Joel, and Johanna. Beverly expressed support for net neutrality, citing censorship as a major concern. Joel was overjoyed with the prospect of overturning net neutrality as he believes this will cause people to become detached from modern technology and talk to each other in person. For our December 12th show of Catch da Flava Youth Radio, co-hosts Beverly and Johanna started off with Health Talks Radio, welcoming guest Wil Carlos from a non profit dedicated to creating services for youth with mental health concerns called Young Ones. They offer youth that utilize their services immediate care with one counselor in each quadrant of the city. Young Ones is not offers no wait times, but all of their employees have experience with mental health concerns, so they can relate to youth that seek their services. They also have youth volunteers, so those who seek their services can identify to volunteers as well. All of this is made in part to encourage those who seek their services to feel comfortable. For this episode of Catch da Flava Youth Radio, we had our Health Talk Radio youth panel discussion and explored the issue of gender-based violence, as December 6th is the National Day of Remembrance and Action on Violence Against Women for Canadians, which remembers the 14 women killed on December 6, 1989, at L’Ecole Polytechnique. Host Erika shared with us she was born shortly after the tragic experience, because as a new mother and immigrant to Canada, her mother had witnessed the live footage of the incident, which induced labour causing Erika to be born premature. With how it can personally affect us in different mental and ​ physical ways, we talked about the effect of gender-based violence for individuals and communities. For our December 5th, 2017 Catch da Flava Radio Show, host Erika welcomed back Geneviève Ramage to finish up their last conversation from a previous show in November. Then she discussed the Immigrant Women’s Integration Program (IWIP) that is offered at the TD Centre for Learning with some audio clips of past participants and their experience in the program. Then we welcomed in studio former participant and current graduate Maria Arteaga. Maria talked about her experience in the program, how she learned useful life skills and her experience in adjusting to a different country, learning things you never had to consider like “layering” her clothes, and even the term “layering.” Maria currently works with the Toronto District School Board and teaches Spanish lessons at the TD Centre for Learning. At Regent Park Focus throughout these weeks, Hopeton has imparted workshops imparted collaborative songwriting, writing help, harmonizing. Youth explored ideas, shared stories found commonalities with their peers, and converted these experiences into song form. That process generated a few original songs that the participants helped to mould from start to finish. The technical knowledge acquisitions that happened during some of these sessions were sampling from online audio sources, sampling instruments, learning the difference between generating sound from internal program sounds and external audio inputs, and synchronizing rhythms. Every participant got an introduction to basic music theory in order to input melodies with the piano keyboard as their input device. An understanding of why certain notes are "harmonic" vs. "dissonant" made their note selection to all the audio works more delightful to the ear. For this edition of Catch da Flava radio show, host Diamond introduced us to the topic of police presence in Regent Park. Because of a long and dark history involving negative relationships with police in the neighbourhood, Regent Park and its youth feel a strong sensitivity toward the very presence of police in the community, and the looming connotations behind that presence. As our show is based in Regent Park, all youth panelists have had interactions in the neighbourhood and understand its impact as youth. Joining our panel discussion were Beverley, Erika, Judy, and Joel. Generally, all panelists felt a wariness when it comes to police presence in the neighbourhood. For our November 28th show of Catch da Flava Youth Radio on Radio Regent, we invited a guest from The CRC which is a local community centre in Regent Park. Cavell Hart joined us for the first half of the show and shared with us on air about holiday festivities going on in the neighbourhood, highlighting an upcoming Winter Market hosted in Regent Park. It will start off in the Big Park with pretzels baked on location at the Bake Oven, before heading over to The CRC to see all the local vendors and the products they will sell. The event hopes to support local businesses by giving them an opportunity to sell their products, and an opportunity for local food industry professionals to provide food services in the community.   There will also be a free movie screening for kids to get them in the spirit of the season with a holiday classic, and other free activities for kids including gingerbread decorating. What The Health?: Celebrating our Unique Bodies Diva Girls Group November 24th 2017 This week the divas started off with their favorite icebreaker, circle rock. Shortly after the icebreaker the diva girls watched a health slideshow. The divas were shown 6 photos on the screen and had to write down whether the person in the picture is healthy or unhealthy, privately in their notebooks. After they watched the slide show, Londzo and Maymuna discussed which photo were healthy and unhealthy and if the divas disagreed, they would have to elaborate on why they disagree. The divas also worked on a “What The Health? “Pie chart. The divas were spilt into 2 groups; each group was given a piece of chart paper and markers. The chart paper had a big circle with four labeled quadrants. The quadrants were labeled as physical, mental, spiritual and sexual. For the second half, host Johanna talked to us about financial difficulties around tuition and the debt surrounding it. She spoke on the rising rate of tuition debt from students across Ontario, her personal experience struggling to finance her education, and introduced the guest for the evening, Zuberi Attard, who is a Carlton University student and creator of the tuition and bursary website scholarpro.ca​ Like Johanna, Zuberi had struggled with personal issues and financial constraints when it comes to funding his education, but with the assistance of others and applying to various scholarships and bursaries, Zuberi was able to finance his entire post-secondary education solely on the money he received from various scholarships and bursaries. ​ Zuberi gave us some tips and highlights when it comes to applying for scholarships and bursaries, such as distinguishing the difference between the two. For our November 21st edition of Catch da Flava Youth radio, we started things off with host Diamond leading a panel discussion on anxiety and how it plays a role in student attendance. Divas Girls Group - A Love Letter to Me

Divas Blog Nov 17th 2017 This week the diva girls explored new creative writing styles. They first started off with a circle rock, where we sit around a circle and we shared one special thing about ourselves. Shortly after that the divas played a Parts of Speech Game. The girls had to define an adjective, verb, noun and ad adverb. Then they were split into two teams, the teams had to write down as many adjectives as possible that started with a special letter like P. As rounds progressed they also were told on how many syllables the adjectives must have. The diva girls really enjoyed the game and after playing a few rounds the girls watched a Haiku video. After watching the video the divas learned about what a haiku is and each girl was given a word, and they had to write a haiku about it without using the word they were given. For this episode of Catch da Flava Youth radio show, host Diamond Bailey introduced the topic of e-cigarettes and what we may think about it. Diamond introduced information on the topic, citing that a study of over 44,000 high school students in Ontario and Alberta was published last month in the Canadian Medical Association Journal (CMAJ), stating a "strong and robust" linkage between so-called vaping and subsequent tobacco use. For our November 14th edition of Catch da Flava Youth Radio Show, we shared a short interview we had with Minister of Citizenship and Immigration, Laura Albanese. In tone with our theme of newcomers and immigration, host Erika welcomed guest Geneviève Ramage to our show, to talk about her role at the TD Learning Centre, which provides free services to newcomers in the Regent Park community. Geneviève discussed the services available, especially the IWIP program, which stands for Immigrant Women Integration Program. Minister Albanese had mentioned that all of us, with the exception of the Indigenous community, are all immigrants to Canada, so Geneviève shared with us her personal story of being a newcomer to the Regent Park community, and how her family is also immigrants to Canada. The Diva Girls Group Session 7: The C-Word...The Basics of Consent- Part 1 November 10th , 2017 Today the Diva's learned about the basics of Consent. To start off, the Divas played a myth busting game. The Divas were given six statements (3 myths and 3 facts) and were required to split into two groups. Each group had a T-chart paper marked Fact or Fiction and they were to guess whether the statement is Fact or Fiction and put it in the correct category. When the Divas recorded their answers, they took it up as a group to see who got the most correct answers. When in groups the girls were shown facts and myths. For our last show celebrating Media Literacy Week on November 10th, We shared an interview with President of the Ontario College of Management and Technology, and Chair of the International Cyber Security and Intelligence Conference, Yomi Olalere. Mr. Olalere shared with us some best practices when it comes to protecting oneself online, including two factor authentication that Professor Deibert mentioned in our Thursday show, and trying as much as possible to only utilized website that have a security feature, what he calls “HTTPS” as opposed to “HTTP”, as it guarantees that the website has security features meant to protect their visitors. In continuing his advice on how to protect oneself online, Mr. Olalere tells us to stay guarded, not to interact with people we don’t know online, and to make sure to privatize our accounts and only share with those we actually know.
