Timeless Generation Podcast Special: Interview with CARP (Formerly Known as the Canadian Association of Retired Persons)
CARP, formerly known as the Canadian Association of Retired Persons, is one of the largest advocacy groups for seniors in the nation, working independently and alongside the government. It is derived from the AARP American Association Retired Persons and was founded more than 20 years ago. They are supported by a membership of 300,000 people and are also supported by educational grants, and Zoomer Media. CARP aims to make Canada the best country to age in. Many individuals will lose their benefits in their older age, and so CARP determines to make recommendations to the government that strives to get seniors pension protection, adequate healthcare, and housing options that are in proximity to relevant services and healthcare facilities.
Other advocacy issues CARP has worked on includes collaborating with Parks and Recreation services to create accessible safety trails to maintain road safety of seniors. Additionally, CARP has successfully advocated for the possibility to receive a higher and stronger dose of the flu shot available to seniors as well as ruling back hydro rates in Ontario with the “Heat or Eat Campaign” after finding that over 60,000 older Ontarians had to choose between eating adequately or heating their homes in the winter of 2015. Finally, CARP produced a national policy platform called the FACES of Canada’s seniors. It stands for financial security, abuse awareness and prevention, care givers, exceptional health care and social inclusion. It aims to engage seniors in activities such as a book clubs, swimming or other forms of exercise.
CARP membership is $20 and is available to anyone with many benefits ranging from wireless phones, insurance and travel. They are a phenomenal organization for seniors and believes “they are stronger in numbers”.
