Little Divas girls' program - January 25th & February 1st

The Little Divas wrapped up the month of January with a look at the themes of self-acceptance and body positivity. On January 25th, the session started with an ice-breaker discussion activity that asked the girls to think about what the most important thing would be to bring with them if they moved to another planet. This made them think about things that they rely on and are important to them in their lives, and also got their creative juices flowing for the rest of the session! As another fun ice-breaker activity for the day, we played a "mix & meet" game with Skittles, where each colour of Skittle was given a specific category, and the girls had to share a piece of information about themselves that related to that category for each Skittle they had of that colour. For example, if the category for blue Skittles was "family", and for red Skittles it was "hobbies", and someone had two blue Skittles and one red, they would have to share two facts about their family, and one about their hobbies. It was a great way for the girls to connect and share details of their lives and interests with each other, and an opportunity for them to take stock of the things they like about themselves, and are passionate about in their lives.

The art project/activity for the week was painting self portraits! First, the girls looked at some magazines and advertisements and discussed what they thought the magazines considered "beautiful" based on what they saw. Then we discussed the reasons behind why exactly the magazines would be trying to push that specific idea of "beautiful" - which is to sell you something, not because their image of "beautiful" is objectively better or more beautiful than other types of appearances. Beauty is subjective - everyone has a different idea of what is beautiful, and everyone is beautiful in their own unique way! After this discussion, the girls got a chance to start painting their own self-portraits, thinking about the parts of their appearance and their personality that they really like. They would continue and finish this activity on February 1st.

On February 1st, the Little Divas program continued on with our exploration of body positivity! As usual, we opened with an ice-breaker discussion, asking the girls if they could time travel, where/when would they go to? These ice breakers are always good to get the girls opening up a little bit, and starting to think creatively for the session ahead. We then played a great ice-breaker game called Walrus. In Walrus, one person steps out of the room to be the guesser. Everyone else decides on an action that the guesser will need to guess by asking them questions. The catch is that nobody can say the actual word of the action when answering the questions, they have to replace the action with "Walrus". So for example, if the action was reading, and the guesser asked, "Do you do it while you're sleeping?" the answer would have to be, "No I can only Walrus while I'm awake." The guesser continues to ask questions until they can guess the action. It was a fun game that got the girls' creativity going, and tested their problem-solving and critical thinking skills.

After these activities, we reviewed what we discussed last week about magazines, media, advertising, etc, and how they sell a specific idea of beauty and the "ideal" body type, but how that is really just to sell products, and not because those standards are truly universally "beautiful". We looked at some more examples of ads and then pointed out and discussed what might be problematic about the ads, and who the ads could be hurting by the messages they are sending.

The girls then went back to their self-portrait painting projects from last week to finish them up. After painting themselves, they cut out bright arrows, pointing out and describing the parts of themselves that they like in their self-portraits! Here are some of their finished products:
